Welcome! I am Dr. Hanyin Chen, and I believe that learning the piano is a profoundly rewarding, lifelong journey of joy, artistic expression, and cognitive growth. Born in Taiwan, I began my own musical training at the tender age of four, spark-igniting a lifelong passion that eventually led me to a career as an active performer and dedicated educator. Today, I bring over 20 years of diverse teaching experience to families across the Gaithersburg, North Potomac, and Rockville communities.

My pedagogical approach combines rigorous, world-class classical training with a supportive and encouraging environment. I believe in designing a personalized curriculum tailored to meet the unique goals of every student—from young beginners aged 3+, to advanced pianists refining their artistry, and adult learners discovering a new, fulfilling creative outlet.

My musical journey includes extensive, world-class training at some of the nation’s most prestigious music institutions. I hold a Doctorate in Piano Performance from the University of Texas at Austin, where I specialized in piano performance and pedagogy. Prior to my doctoral studies, I earned my Master’s degree, with the Highest Distinction, from the renowned Indiana University School of Music, establishing a deep foundation in both solo performance and collaborative artistry.

Currently, in addition to directing Joyful Keys Studio, I am proud to serve as a faculty member at Montgomery College, where I help shape the next generation of musical talent.

A Vision Born at Age 16

Dr. Chen’s years of rigorous training ultimately shaped her deeply personal teaching philosophy — but it was a single, transformative moment at age 16 that changed the course of my musical life. Attending a profoundly moving opera performance ignited my passion for music in an entirely new way, leading me to discover my own authentic musical “voice.”

That epiphany propelled me toward a life fully dedicated to the piano—and instilled in me a lifelong mission: to help every student I teach find their own voice, their own joy, and their own personal reason to play.

Every lesson at Joyful Keys Studio is informed by this lifelong relationship with the instrument. Because I have walked the path from a curious young beginner to a doctoral performer, I understand the milestones, the hurdles, and the triumphs of music education. My mission is to pass that wealth of knowledge down to you or your child, translating decades of high-level study into practical, joyful, and localized milestone achievements.
